How to Make A Facebook Business Page: Basic Tactics

If you want to know how to make a Facebook business page, it is surprisingly easy. In this part of the article called Basic Tactics, I've included links and screen shots to help walk you through the process.

Each step narrates the purpose of each step of signing up.
(if we aren't connected on Facebook you can find my Facebook page here)

How To Create

1. Set up a Facebook profile.

Visit Facebook.com and set up a profile.

  • Enter your first name and last name.
  • You can use either an email or phone number.
  • Create a password.
  • Tell Facebook your birthday and your gender.
  • Click Sign Up.

Note: At the bottom, there is a link to create a page. While you may be tempted to jump into the business page, Facebook will not allow you. Also, don't be tempted to use your business in a personal profile. Facebook can (and will) shut you down.

2. Create and set up your business page.

Once you have a profile set up, visit www.facebook.com/pages/create.php.

  • Carefully look at all six of these categories of Pages.
  • Pick the best one that fits your brand, product or service.
  • Scroll through the subcategories in the sub menu.

If you aren't sure which one is the best fit, look up pages that are similar to your business. Go to their “About” section and you can see what category they chose. It does help if you are really not sure what to pick.

3. Set up the about section of your page.

One of the most important steps in how to make a Facebook business page is your About section. The next page you get to is the About section. Though you can always skip it and come back to it later, this section is very important.

It gives people an idea of what your page is about.Screen Shot 2015-04-24 at 11.00.36 PM

Rebekah Radice says it best:

Your “About” isn’t simply a toss-away bio. It’s an opportunity to immediately connect with potential fans.

Have a great tagline? Use it here!

Want to use a specific call to action? Do it!

And don’t forget to add a hyperlink to your website. This allows anyone landing on your page to instantly click-through to your website without a prolonged search.

At this stage, you want to at least add a basic tagline or description of your page and your website address. You can always edit it later.

4. How to make a Facebook business page with great images.

There are two images that are very important for your Facebook Page – your profile picture and your cover photo. At this stage, Facebook only asks you for your Profile Picture.Screen Shot 2015-04-25 at 11.38.14 AM

Here is a photo tip by Louise Myers:

Put a personal face on your business – unless you’re a known brand, or your business is widely recognized by your logo, use your face as your Profile Photo. People don’t “connect” with a logo – they connect with a face. I would go so far as to say: people tend to ignore logos – but are hard-wired to pay attention to faces.

If you have a nice photo of yourself, your product or brand, you are in great shape! Upload that image and move on.

If not, skip this section and come back when you have a good photo. Don't leave your Page without a photo for too long – it can hurt your brand or cause people to distrust you.

5. Add to favorites.

When you are interacting with other pages, things can get cluttered. Like your own page and add it to your favorites so that you can consistently find it easily.

6. Choose your Preferred Page Audience.

This is where things get fancy. If you are an experienced business owner, then you know that you can't target everyone with your products and services.

Screen Shot 2015-04-24 at 11.01.36 PMAccording to Optiverse:

Audiences allow you to control which visitors can see your experiment, based on whether they match a list of conditions that you specify. For example, you can include or exclude visitors who use certain browsers, come from certain sources (ex. AdWords campaign, Google search, or Facebook ad), have certain cookies, or visit your URL with certain query parameters.

As you can see, you can get the most out of your Facebook Page by using targeted visitors. Social Mouths does a fantastic job of teaching traffic by explaining targeted visitors, edgerank, and more.

7. Tweak your page.

That concludes the basic steps on how to make a Facebook business page. Setting up your page is easy. Seek Social Media covers some tips I haven't covered, like editing your text, connecting other social media pages and keeping your page neat and organized.

How to Make A Facebook Business Page: Advanced Tactics

This section will help you figure out how to make a Facebook business page with advanced settings, and tweaks to the basic steps. I will also go over how to set it up to properly represent your business, and work for you while you sleep.

Remember, a Facebook Page is NOT a static webpage. This is social media. That means that your page needs to be updated regularly and you need to engage with your fans. You need to treat this Page like a cherished garden – plant the seeds; grow your following; prune, weed and harvest; repeat.

Amy Porterfield zeros in on the most important aspects of Facebook engagement:

When it comes to Facebook engagement, there are just four things Facebook is monitoring.  You ready for this?  Facebook is looking to see if your fans either:

1) LIKE your post

2) COMMENT on your post

3) SHARE your post, or

4) CLICK a link in your post (if you include one of course).

THAT IS IT.  If Facebook users are not doing one of these four actions, Facebook thinks your audience is not at all interested in your content.  If Facebook thinks your fans are not interested in your posts, they won’t push your posts out into the news feed and your reach declines.  Now do you see how REACH and ENGAGEMENT go hand in hand?

That being said, it is time to get started on some advanced tactics on how to make a Facebook business page.

1. Birth a strategy.

Creating a strategy means more than figuring out what time to post your updates. It takes some planning. If you have done market research on your demographics, then this will be easier for you.

If you know your customers well, think of them and people like them.

If you are not sure how to begin, then you will have some work to do.

Jon Loomer helps you think of the really important questions:

I know you don’t think that all you need to do is start a Facebook Page and the money will start rolling in… right??

You need a strategy. What is your tone? What are your goals? Who will manage the Page? Do you want to increase brand awareness? Increase sales? Subscriptions? You’ve gotta sort these things out before you get started. And be focused!

If you think about the answers to these questions, then you go in and dominate among other small business owners in your niche.

2.  Content is king, and images are the crown.

When planning your content, you will want to use images. Images are hot. People love them, because they tell a story, they illustrate, they fill in the blanks.

They bring your business to life.

If you are not convinced, think about why almost every family has a photo album even before social media. People love pictures.

When planning your images, use a great headshot for your profile picture. Use that image consistently across social media. Then, they always know it's you, from Facebook to YouTube.

Your cover photo should represent your business. It tells a story about your brand.Screen Shot 2015-04-25 at 11.38.14 AM

As you can see in this mock-up Facebook page, I used my headshot that I use on my business page. Because this is a page for a cupcake business, I used a professional shot of cupcakes.

If you are taking your own photos, be sure they are professional, appealing and properly represent your business.

Each photo should have an aim, whether to personalize your business, show progress, show value, or something else that benefits your business.

Timeline photos can be of:

  • Things you do around town.
  • Your office.
  • Your computer.
  • A meme related to your business.
  • Featured images from blog posts (with attached blog post).
  • Team members.
  • Staff.
  • Ads (use sparingly).

If your business is conceptual (like a service), then you can find some great free photos. Fizzle has a list of 50 here.  Most are taken by professional photographers. They have a lot of Instagramish effects, artistic angles and are beautiful. They definitely aren't your old school stock photos.

3. Add details to your About section.

Screen Shot 2015-04-25 at 5.22.18 PM

Here is is the About section. I will go over some of the sections, but not all, as they may not be the same for you. You can also leave some of these sections blank if they do not apply to you.

  • Category: You should already have this filled out. This gives your visitors an idea of what you are about. For cupcakes, it's pretty straightforward. For other businesses and services, it may not be. You can edit it.
  • Name: Your business name.  You can edit if misspelled.
  • Facebook Web Address: This is what you will use to direct people to your webpage. Choose a vanity URL that matches your business name to make it easy to remember.
  • Start Info: Pick the year you were founded, or if you are the brand, when you started. People like to see how long someone has been in business. Give them that information.
  • Short Description: The short description is rather like your tagline. You can use your tagline, or you can describe yourself in a way that describes your business. Here are some examples:Pet store – “New York's favorite place to find their next best friend.”
Marketer – “Marketing for professionals looking to start their own business.”
Graphic Designer – “Innovative graphics that get sales.”
  • Impressum: Some countries require you to give a statement of ownership. If you are not required by law, it is up to you to decide what, if anything, to put in there.
  • Long Description: Here, You can tell a story. Fill in interesting details. Talk about your mission. Just be sure to make it interesting and value-driven for your visitors. That means, talk about the value you give your audience, not completely about you.
  • Phone: Add your phone number, if you want it made public. This is an important section.
  • Email: Your main email, or several, depending on how you delegate email. Another very important section.
  • Website: Your website(s). Super important. It is a way to drive traffic to your website. Sadly, many new business owners, creative professionals and entrepreneurs forget to fill this out. Don't be that person.
  • Facebook Page ID: Your Facebook Page ID number. You can use this for apps on Facebook. You cannot change this. If you don't know what this is, don't worry about it too much.

How to make a Facebook business page: A final word.

I mentioned this earlier, but I want to stress it again. When you start posting, you will want to have a plan, you will want to schedule your content and you will want to think about what you want your page to do for you.

Do you want your page to promote your business? Personalize your brand? Capture leads?

Establishing a social presence is not enough. You want to know why and you will want to gear your posts towards that goal.

Congratulations, you have finished your Facebook business page!
